The project EuropeanaPhotography is proud to present an exciting journey to discover the most pristine places on the planet. Over seventy years of explorations are recounted in 8,000 images just published in Europeana: from the travels of Doudart Lagrée-Garnier in the kingdom of Siam and Cambodia (1866-1868) documented by Émile Gsell to the mission of the Society in Albania (1939-1940) under the guide of Aldo Sestini and Ferdinando Milone.

The adventures of the pioneers of geographical knowledge have extraordinary witnesses as Adolfo Porry Pastorel, the father of the Italian photojournalism, who illustrates the preparations for the Italian airship Norge led by Umberto Nobile who participated in the flight of the Arctic together with Amundsen and Ellsworth in 1926, or Giotto Dainelli who tells in pictures the experience in the Karakoram of 1913-1914, the most important Italian exploratory expedition in Asia of the Twentieth Century.

The collection also includes valuable masterpieces not only from the point of view of the historical record, but also for their rarity, such as aristotypes with ethnographic subject by Ermanno Stradelli and Guido Boggiani or by an exceptional photographer: Elena del Montenegro, the future Queen of Italy.
